Newcastle Heroes Are Not All Footballers

Tags: , ,

Alan Shearer, Jackie Milburn, Hughie Gallacher. Three of the most important men of Newcastle’s history and three men who have all worn the football club’s number nine shirt with pride.

Footballers are seen as gods in the Toon whether they’re goalscorers like the Malcolm Macdonald, skillful providers like Peter Beardsley or just players with a never-say-die attitude like Brian Kilcline. If someone plays well for the team, it doesn’t matter if they’re local or from abroad, the Geordie faithful will adore them.

While footballers may be the top tier of northern celebrities, famous people in other areas are increasingly becoming noted.

Black Jack Mulligan was a wrestler in the 1960s and 70s and, alongside other wrestlers of the time such as Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, is regarded as one of the UK’s most legendary fighters.

Restaurateur Abdul Latif has become a local celebrity – partly due to his coverage in adult comic magazine Viz, and partly due to his restaurant offering what he claims is the world’s hottest curry free to anyone who can finish it – and one of the group of celebrity chefs known as The Hairy Bikers was born just outside Newcastle.

The Hairy Bikers got their big break on television and that’s where many Geordies start out. Jimmy Nail, despite having no previous acting experience, was given the role of ‘Oz’ in “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” before embarking on a successful career as an actor and musician. In addition, Byker Grove has helped start television careers – Donna Air used her experience on the show to become a presenter and, more famously, Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (better known as Ant and Dec) started a music career before becoming two of the most well-known presenters on British television.

Music is a big part of the Geordie culture. The Lighthouse Family met at the city’s university, Brian Johnson (the lead singer of AC/DC since 1972) was born in the area and, more recently, Cheryl Tweedy, now known as Cheryl Cole, of Girls Aloud grew up on Tyneside.

Like many Geordies chasing fame, Cheryl moved away from the area to be closer to the English heart of the music industry and since her marriage to London-based footballer Ashley Cole she has started to spend more time in the capital.

X Factor – Simon Cowell Axed From the Show After It’s Revealed Cheryl Cole Has 2009 X Factor Winner

Tags: , , , , , ,

What has the X factor got that no other television program has that could possibly match the number of people who tune it to watch every week. The shows addictive I grant you that. We have people near to breaking point should they miss the show. So what is it about the X factor that has millions of people to the box to a point…that when they thirst they stay thirsty for fear of missing something. How many of you can honestly admit to sitting there nearly peeing your pants or scared to blink for the same reason. Is it the inoffensive Irishman Louis Walsh, or is the beautiful face of Cheryl Cole, wife of Chelsea football player Ashley Cole the reason you are besotted. Or could the azure blue eyes of Danni Minnogue have you infatuated at. Still not got a clue, well let me tell you, its the main man himself “Simon Cowell.” The X factor, aside from the competitors would be nothing without Simon. He is the most entertaining person on the X factor and that is without singing a.

Simon has the last say, and its only right that he does because the show would be a farce. He does the hiring and the firing. And there is no chance he is ever going to “axe” himself because he knows his job all too well and puts in a 100%, no matter whose feelings he hurts or whose heart he breaks.

Last week on the X Factor we lost contestants Miss Frank the singing girl trio, but lets be honest they were never going to win the X factor when all the other hopefuls performed better in the eyes of the public. Nevertheless I defend the group and wished they had stayed in when I rewind the video tape back to torture myself watching the antics of Rachel Adedeji. Okay the girl was excited after getting through to the next round, but after her war dance and frantic squealing on stage, I would have loved to have gone a few rounds with her in a boxing ring to shut her up. Sorry Rachel you lost my vote. If she does not get booted off the X factor next week then expect more of this unnecessary jolliness to endure.

I think a lot of people were shocked to see Danyl Johnson in the bottom two this week. No one can argue that he is not talented, confident and has a great voice, but his onslaught of nastiness towards fellow contestant single mom of one, Stacey Solomon has not helped. These rivals (wannabe pop idols) are away from home and away from their loved ones, so its natural for them to feel lonely and under pressure. Both emotions can easily give cause for some bickering to go on behind scenes. This has to be ignored. Contestants need to be judged on their voice and not who they have taken a dislike too.

Who is going to win the X factor, well did Kian from Westlife not tell us who last night. But who says that Kian is not wrong. As much as I love every member of Westlife who deserved every bit of success they had since they first started, I have to argue that talented singers like Kian are not always right. So now we are back to square one as to who will win the X factor, or deserves to win it this year.

Who am I to argue with the nation who has taken a shine to John and Edward Grimes – Louis last of the bunch, who Simon Cowell called the horror twins. Sorry Simon you got it wrong this time, did you not mean the terrible twins which is more appropriate to match their singing voices. How can anybody (which they are) in their right mind compare these two lads with Boyzone? Get outta here I am having none of it, and you may bet neither is Ronan Keating and other members of Boyzone. And I think Stephen Gately would turn in his grave after hearing this. We miss you Stephen and peace be with you.

I have an awful hunch that Cheryl Cole is going to be the mentor that may well take victory and recognition of mentoring the winner of X factor 2009, or it could be Danni, no I am sticking with Cheryl Cole who has had a big hit with her new single “Fight For This Love” after going solo away from her other band mates out of Girls Aloud..

I have always thought why not allow the competitors themselves to pick their own songs to sing. I know the purpose of a mentor is there to help and guide their singers, but in the past we have seen some very talented singers with fabulous voices get booted off the X factor. Could their mentors choice of song be the reason we see what may have been the next Whitney Houston or Supremes leave the stage in tears because they got the lowest vote. Was the voters judgment hampered by song choice?

A prime example: and proof the mentor is not always right was when Simon Cowell laid into Cheryl Cole about her choice of song for 16 year old Lloyd Daniels. As always Simon Cowell put in his penny worth and came to the rescue of Lloyd. What Simon said brought Cheryl Cole near to tears that she fought back but struggled doing so. Simon quite blatantly said that Cheryl chose the wrong song for the young boy, and how right he was. Was Simon right to intervene so Lloyd could still stay in the running to compete the following week? Cheryl gave Lloyd a big hug over the judge panel desk in front of millions and said sorry for the cock-up, but its them sort of cock-ups that see lads like Lloyd leave the stage in tears. Cheryl you need to be careful because I believe you have two singers that are going to give Louis and Simon and their contestants a run for their money. The good thing about allowing the competitors in a talent show like this choose their own song is, that any cock-ups is of their own and have no one else to blame should they not make it through to the final, so any crying that is done was brought about by themselves.

X Factor: This years 2009 finalists are to record a Micheal Jackson charity single in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. I have n’t even heard the song yet but will certainly be buying it as my way of supporting the charity. The track, a cover of Michael Jacksons You Are Not Alone, will raise funds for the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children. If Sir Bob Geldof the man who stopped the world for a day with band aid has anything to do with the song then we will certainly see the sales of the record soar.

The X factor contestants will sing the song during the results show on Sunday November 15, with it going on sale the next day.

Simon Cowell said every year a charity single will officially be an annual event. Simon I do not salute you although deserving of it, instead I pat you on the back for helping the needy in this way. All 12 of the acts who made it into the final – including those sent packing or booted off will perform on the track. This Michael Jackson song went to number one in 1995.

Danyl Johnson has already been slated for causing upset to Stacey Solomon and ends up in the bottom two. And now I read in the paper that Lucie Jones accused Joseph McElderry, who not only has a great voice, but a smile to win anyone over for throwing a tambourine in her face. Can we expect to see Joe in the bottom two this week? He said sorry Lucie over and over what more do you want. You know it was not intentional. We all know Joe is one of the nicest guys in this contest. What is it with these girls showing their weakness in trying to eliminate who they see as a threat to them winning the X factor? If Joseph McElderry does not win this years X Factor then there is no one can deny that he did not have the winning smile

Ashley Cole – The World’s Best Left Back?

Tags: ,

Is it just me, or is Ashley Cole severely under-rated in his own country? I certainly can’t think of a better left back in world football at the moment. In fact, after watching England matches for nearly 50 years, I can go back to Ray Wilson and still not find a match for all the qualities that the Chelsea player has.

Ashley Cole, after all, is fast, strong, competitive, has the ability to run up and down the pitch all day if necessary and not only has good positional awareness but also has a terrific speed of recovery should he get caught out. Unlike so many modern full backs, he has got the ability to defend as well as simply being able to offer attacking threats. At just about 29 years of age, then, shouldn’t the English be celebrating the fact that the best full back in the modern game is, hopefully, going to be at his peak going into next summer’s World Cup tournament?

And yet, there are so many people who, whilst acknowledging Cole’s undoubted ability, would always want to add caveats about mistakes he’s made – on and off the pitch – that colour their judgement of him.

Arsenal supporters, of course, will especially want to vilify their former player. Cole made 228 first team appearances for the Gunners – with 9 goals to his credit – and helped them win a good number of trophies. Instead of remembering his achievements, however, people instead concentrate on his last days for the club and some of the comments he, perhaps rather unwisely, made about being undervalued. Certainly the player did himself no favours when trying to explain why he needed more money! Since his departure to Chelsea, in August 2007, Cole has always received a hostile reaction from the fans at the Emirates, which he has largely dealt with in a sensible manner. Certainly when he set up the first two goals in last month’s 3 – 0 Chelsea victory at the stadium there was none of the posturing and triumphalism that came from Arsenal’s more recent bête noir, Emmanuel Adebayor.

Perhaps Ashley Cole has also had to contend with a greater focus on his private life than many other players. His wife, of course, is now one of Britain’s most popular women – amongst both sexes, it must be said. Since his marriage to Cheryl Cole he has come under intense scrutiny every time he has stepped out of the house, it seems.

All these things aside, Ashley Cole has gone from strength to strength on the football pitch. There was a time at Chelsea when perhaps his attacking was reined in a bit too much but that did a lot, in retrospect, to sharpen his defensive skills. Now he happily seems to be able to combine both rôles with equal success. Cole marauding into opposition penalty areas and swapping intelligent passes with teammates is as common a site as seeing the player hound a winger out of the game in the defensive third. It is very rare indeed for Ashley Cole to lose those one on one battles with wingers that he seems to enjoy so much; Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi included.

I yield to no-one in my admiration for the Brazilian full backs Maicon and Dani Alves, the Frenchmen Evra and Abidal and Spain’s Sergio Ramos. For me, though, none of them has the all-round game to match England’s own Ashley Cole; I wish we had someone as good at right back!

With 77 caps now and 95 games for Chelsea under his belt, perhaps it’s about time English fans realised just how lucky we are to have a player of this quality, and with his degree of determination, and appreciated him just a little bit more.

Who Will Win the X-Factor Fashion Stakes?

Tags: , ,

The X-Factor returned to our screens on Saturday and the show ended up with what Simon Cowell described as the best first audition ever from school teacher Danyl Johnson. It was a really great performance, certainly not possible in the old format in front of just the judges, but with the live audience Danyl set out to entertain, and boy did he entertain.

Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue both looked fantastic. Danni sported a great new bob hairstyle and looked very stylish. As usual she was seen in her trademark one shoulder outfits. Danni’s look on the show has always been marked by blouses, knee length skirts and dresses, and great statement shoes. This perhaps indicates her more mature years over Cheryl.

Cheryl wore a great Tibi dress, and sported a coiffed pony tail look. She appeared to have adopted more colourful items, although as the auditions were through the summer maybe that was an influence. Think of Cheryl and you think of short dresses, tightly fitting outfits, leather trousers and platform heels. As the most talked about member of glamour girl group Girls Aloud, she is a trendsetter rather than a follower of fashion.

Do they compete which each other over fashion? They say no, but no doubt they both want to look better than their fellow judge, although I am sure they would not dare to be heard in public saying rival.

My money is still on Cheryl getting more fashion headlines, but that is more to do with her looks and youth, and popularity, than necessarily dressing better. Danni has her style, and no doubt will also have designers wanting to dress her when the live finals come around.

As for who will win in the fashion stakes? Hard to tell, but there will be plenty of great dresses that will have celebrity wannabes clamouring to get a similar style in the coming weeks.

Create Your Own Danni Minogue X Factor Look

Tags: , , ,

Saturday night TV is back and X Factor is once again gripping the nation. So what’s the most enjoyable part of the show? Is it the singing? Is it the foul mouthed judges (no names mentioned)? Is it the humiliation of the singers when they hit a bum note? No, for me it is checking out the new styles of the judges, the clothes, the hair, the makeup. Now that is real Saturday night TV!

So, let’s take Dannii Minogue for example. We can all admit that over the years she has been on X Factor she has sometimes got it very, very wrong. However, at the moment she really has hit the ground running. Her new hair cut is incredible on a number of levels. Her sassy bob makes her look fantastic for her age, and let’s be honest she isn’t getting any younger. She is an inspiration to women who have shorter hair, and she appears to have finally picked a grown up look that really accentuates her features and says “hey, I might be older than you, but I’ve still got what it takes.”

So, the question that is on all of our lips is “what does Cheryl make of this?”. Last year she was the outright winner of the X Factor style battle, but this year Dannii is definitely holding her own. In fact, sources are saying that Cheryl is quite taken a-back, and has already consulted her stylist to come up with a fresher, more modern style.

So, how do you go about getting Dannii’s new look? If you have a fringe, you can try Dannii’s look and it will instantly update your features and give you that Saturday night glam feel.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Hair Extensions?

The most lusted after celebrity hair style of the moment is Cheryl Cole’s long and lusciously thick locks. Hair like Cheryl’s is so popular because it is versatile, glamorous and signifies health and vitality. It has been well-documented that Cheryl received a little help in the form of real hair extensions in creating her glorious barnet, but it is not only celebrities who can achieve red carpet-worthy hair. More and more ‘normal’ people like you and me and turning to hair extensions as a way of achieving instant glamour and length and loving the results.

Growing and maintaining a long hair style can take up a considerable amount of time, and for some the wait is too much to bear. Therefore, hair extensions are the solution to the long hair most of us have been dreaming of. Some people find that their hair just doesn’t grow as fast as other people’s does or that it stops growing when it reaches a certain point. This can be very frustrating for someone who craves lovely long locks. Long hair is known for its versatility and hair extensions mean that you can experiment with lots of different styles without being restricted by the length of your hair. You can reinvent your style with the perfect accessory: beautiful hair. If you do decide that long hair isn’t for you can remove the extensions or have them trimmed so that they suit you perfectly and you won’t have to go through the pain of cutting the hair that you have so patiently grown.

Hair extensions are not always all about extra length. Some people have extensions put in as a way of creating thickness and volume to thin or limp hair. Extensions can also be a good solution to thinning hair. Good quality hair extensions will always match your hair colour perfectly so that no-one except you will know that your flowing locks aren’t all your own. You can also experiment with colour and highlights as a way of reinventing your look with extensions.

If you choose to have high quality extensions fitted then you will be able to treat them as you would your own hair. You can style it with heat appliances and wash it the same way that you would normally. You will need to visit the salon for maintenance check ups every 6 to 8 weeks though in case adjustments need to be made.

On the other hand, the initial process of applying hair extensions can be very lengthy. Although it will not hurt if done properly, it is very time-consuming. The duration taken to apply the extensions depends on the length, fullness and the method of application. In some cases we could be talking 8 to 9 hours sat at the salon.

The biggest obstacle standing between you and the hair of your dreams is the cost. It is not worth scrimping on the hair quality as you will not be pleased with the results and it will look cheap. If you want your extensions to look as natural and beautiful as possible you need to invest in some top quality hair. This costs a lot more but in my opinion it is worth the cost. The cost will also depend on the length and volume of the hair extension and on the stylist you choose for getting them applied.

Another major drawback is the potential damage that you could be doing to your real hair. Some people get away without suffering any damage at all but others may react differently to hair extensions. You may be one of the lucky ones but if you are contemplating hair extensions then you need to be aware of the potential damage they could do to you. Since the hair is attached using thermal heat, braiding or glue it can damage the hair root or strand. The glues, chemicals and heat can break, split or burn the hair strands, while the tight knots and braiding technique of a weave can even pull your hair out of the root or cause your scalp excess stress.

If you do make the decision to get hair extensions then make sure you are dealing with a fully qualified technician. You should make sure that the hair that is being applied is not too heavy so as not to put any unnecessary pressure on your scalp or your own hair. If you are not sure about making the commitment to having hair extensions properly fixed in then try clip in hair extensions. These extensions can be removed and clipped in whenever you need some instant glamour. They do no damage whatsoever and are completely safe. Whatever you choose, make sure that you are fully clued up on your decision before you go ahead with any procedures.

The top celebrity that the UK wants to draw inspiration from is Cheryl Cole, with 19% looking towards the Girls Aloud star for inspiration and tips on how to get the perfect look. Other celebrities popular amongst the UK for design ideas include Simon Cowell (16%) and Nigella Lawson (15%), a complete mix of celebrities from varying backgrounds.

With every list there is a bottom as well as a top and a number of stars have been highlighted as a no go zone for fashion tips. Jordan came top of the list of fashion no no’s with a massive 27% of the votes. In second place, not surprisingly, is the Queen with 17% of the votes and in third, rather ironically, was Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen with 16% of the votes. This simply shows that money and fame do not buy you credibility, neither does being a design and makeover guru guarantee that people like your ideas.

Simon Cowell was top choice for 20% the men in the survey, whilst Nigella Lawson particularly appealed to the 35 – 64 age group. Her majesty the Queen also proved an unlikely trendsetter, with those over 65 favouring her home for style tips, though unable to win the hearts and minds of everything else in the survey.

The celebrity with the least coveted interior style was Jordan with 27% of people not believing a visit to her home would provide any style tips or ideas.

Inferior Interiors?

Despite the current economic climate research has shown that UK residents are still spending more on their homes and making them look good with 20% spending more than ?1,000 on injecting more flair into the home in the past year and 40% having spent ?500 or more, with men surveyed most likely to apply a lick of paint to give their home a personal touch and women most likely to ensure they have matching accessories.

The research also showed that 80% of people feel their homes reflect their personality, with the living room capturing their style and personality most, followed by their bedroom. Bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms were seen as less stylish and six in ten people in the UK and Ireland would like to make more of a statement with their home, women in particular, with a further 55% of people feeling conscious of what other people think about their home.

Nosey Brits

Research has shown that we all like to know what other people have in their home and what people get up to when in other peoples bathrooms. Findings have revealed that almost half (46%) of naughty Brits have had a nose in other peoples bathroom cupboards, with women more likely to than men and 59% of under 25s admitting to taking a peek to see what’s inside.

In addition, 55% of us have confessed to something embarrassing happening to them in someone else’s stylish bathroom. 30% of us have embarrassingly walked in or been walked in upon whilst in the bathroom whilst 13% of us have blocked a toilet or plughole and 5% of us have broken something whilst having a look around. Another 5% of people have been caught short on the way to the bathroom, while a cheeky 3% have been caught borrowing something that does not belong to them.

Abbey and Peter Crouch’s Honeymoon Gift List

Tags: , , ,

Jason Statham and Sophie Monk

Abbey Clancy has managed to remain friends with her ex, Jason Statham, and we would guess that in celebrity circles that means an invite to the wedding of the year. But what will an actor qualified in mixed-martial arts buy from the couple’s honeymoon gift registry? Well, we can only imagine that he’ll leave the present buying to his new girlfriend, Sophie Monk.

Like Abbey, Sophie was once in a girl-group. However, her band was slightly more successful than Abbey’s, and Sophie managed to secure herself a couple of number one singles. We’re sure that Abbey could use some career advice, or failing that, we think that a great present for the couple’s honeymoon gift registry would be the hire of the exclusive Lime Green Records studio in Dubai. A day’s package at the studio involves tuition with a singing coach, as well as a recording of your own single on CD. We just hope that Abbey and Peter don’t go all Jordan and Peter Andre on us, and subject the world to another album of duetted Disney Songs.

Ashley and Cheryl Cole

Cheryl and Abbey are used to going head-to-head in FHM readers’ polls, but in reality these two WAGs get on really well. We’re almost certain that the well-manicured Cheryl and Ashley will be happy to contribute to the honeymoon gift list and speculate that they would treat them to the original gift of a group day at a luxury health spa. But whilst we feel that Cheryl, Abbey and Ashley will feel right at home at the Grand Spa in the Hyatt Hotel, we can’t imagine that Peter would be so relaxed in such metrosexual surroundings. However, seeing his new wife coated in the chocolate-based massage treatments that this spa specialises in is certain to change his mind, and we’re sure that if they were to buy this gift then it would prove to be a welcome addition to the honeymoon gift registry.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney

Abbey likes shopping nearly as much as Coleen and both girls certainly know the secrets of mixing designer and high street. But whilst the streets of Liverpool are the venue of choice for these WAGs, we would imagine that Abbey will choose to indulge in her little retail habit whilst on her honeymoon. We speculate that a seasoned shopper, like Coleen would add a shopping tour in the Emirates to the couple’s honeymoon gift registry and whilst the couple are bound to indulge in all their designer favourites the honeymoon gift list excursion commonly offered throughout Dubai aims to introduce them to some more traditional souks, where they can drop some dirham furnishing their six-bedroom house in Alderley Edge.

Janice Dickinson

Janice and Abbey paired up to present “Abbey & Janice: Beauty and the Best”, following Abbey’s efforts to break into the American modeling market. But whilst Abbey’s attempts we’re clearly not very successful, we’re sure that Abbey wouldn’t hold that against her co-host, and would probably even provide her with a wedding invite. In the first episode of the series Janice forced Abbey to dive with sharks in the Liverpool Aquarium, and we imagine that this initiation could very well make an appearance on the honeymoon gift list. The Dubai Mall is the place to go if you want to dive with sharks in the Emirates and as the mall is practically Abbey’s second-home, we think that this extreme sport will provide a romantic start to the couple’s dream honeymoon.

We’re sure that with WAGs the world over hoping to secure an invite to 2010s hottest event, there are bound to be many more crazy additions to the couple’s honeymoon gift list. But with us guesstimating grand gifts of sharks, shopping trips and spas, you can only imagine how disappointed we’ll be if the couple opt for a rather more demure wedding gift list in Argos.

Celebrity Hair Extensions – Who’s Faking It?

Tags: , ,

Hair extensions represent a trend that started purely in the world of celebrity. It is a trend however that crossed over and is now widely available to anyone who wants them applied to add a bit of length, volume, and colour and to basically give their hair a bit of a lift. For many celebs however this goes a step further…

For many celebs the key to fantastic hair comes with the clever use of hair extensions that are carefully blended to match natural hair; this is otherwise known as actress hair and used to be one of the biggest secrets when it came to the world of celebrity hairdressers. Due to the easy availability of hair extensions etc, many celebrities have much shorter hair in their private lives than they do in their public lives.

Before extensions really started to explode on our scene, the hairdressers to the stars weren’t allowed to openly discuss which celebrities were faking it and what their natural length was. Oh how times have changed! Now, thanks to extensions being available to the public, a lot more celebs are open about whether they are or aren’t wearing them. It has also led to a lot more big name stars trying them out for themselves. So just who are these celebs who have embraced longer, fuller hair?

Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham, Michelle Heaton and Cheryl Cole as well as Lilly Allen are just a few examples of some of the people who have embraced extensions at some point, many of them often going back for more.

Paris Hilton is constantly reinventing her hair through the use of hair extensions. Cheryl Cole has used them to add length and volume, which was achieved through a full head of natural texture great length extensions. Jessica Simpson loves hers so much that she has brought out her own range of extensions and is rarely seen without them. Victoria Beckham has currently ditched her long locks but relied on them a few years ago and Michelle Heaton is another fan of great lengths extensions. She loves them so much that after having her extensions removed she soon returned to a salon to have them put back in.

All of the celebs who do fake it do so because they love to play around with different hairstyles. This may be to just add a bit of length and volume for an interview or it could be to experiment with bold colour streaks.

If you are one of the many people who want to follow in the footsteps of celebs and have extensions applied for yourself you should be aware of how you properly care for them. Be being aware of tips such as the following you will ensure that you get the most from your extensions and that they last as long as they can:

o Use a soft brush

o Gently tie your hair back when you are sleeping

o Don’t colour your hair extensions at home

o Prevent tangling by running your fingers through

o Don’t spray them with conditioners or silicone based products

Remember celebs only get the best so if you truly want hair that matches your idols then it is important you choose your salon wisely. You need to ensure that your stylist is highly trained, skilled and experienced in the application and removal of hair extensions.

Start Slimming This Summer

Tags: , ,

Summer is the ideal time for people to begin slimming down to achieve their perfect body shape, according to a weight loss expert. Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World head of nutrition and research, said that men and women should use the positive energy of summer to help them lose weight and get a desirable beach body before they go on holiday.

“Psychologically, the summer holidays can be a great time of year to start your weight loss journey. The warmer weather brings with it a feeling of optimism, creating a positive state of mind,” she said.

Achieving an acceptable beach body is a serious worry for many potential holidaymakers and may stop them from enjoying their precious time away from work, according to research by Slimming World.

A national survey of women conducted by the organisation and YouGov found that wearing a swimming costume in public was the top holiday horror for 73 per cent of travellers.

In addition, 62 per cent of female holidaymakers said that they feared wearing revealing clothes and 39 per cent confessed that they felt unable to go on a beach on holiday because of concern about their body image.

“Most women worry about their bodies sometimes and there’s nothing like the thought of stripping off on a crowded beach to bring those anxieties to the forefront,” said Dr Lavin.

Scientists at the University of Liverpool discovered that weight loss products can help people who want to lose weight fast if they take them alongside a balanced diet and healthy exercise regime.

Losing weight through products such as t5 slimming pills and t5 fat burners is likely to help people boost their confidence before they embark on a beachside holiday.

Dr Lavin said: “Starting to shed unwanted pounds before heading off on holiday is great for self esteem.”

Hollywood starlet Charlize Theron was recently photographed with a weight loss product while shopping in Los Angeles and has admitted to experiencing ‘fat days’ like other women.

The Oscar-winning actress said: “Life is just as complicated for me as it is for any other woman out there and I wake up just like ever other woman sometimes and can’t fit into my jeans and feel fat and ugly and have bad days.” Further research by Slimming World and YouGov found that curvy Kate Winslet had the most desirable celebrity body of 2009 ahead of Kelly Brook, Halle Berry and Cheryl Cole.

X Factor Winners Or Are They

Tags: ,

The X Factor has become very popular in the UK with millions of viewers glued to their television sets every Saturday evening whilst the series lasts. Some watch the talent show because they want to have a laugh at the awful auditions, some watch because they want to see new performers do well.

Personally I feel uncomfortable watching some of the really awful auditions. I hate it when the panel (Simon Cowell, Danni Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole) laugh inanely at the efforts of others. I don’t find singers trying their hardest to impress funny, just sad when they clearly can’t sing. Neither can I, but like those poor singers I wish that I could sing. I’ve got to admit to laughing at the effect scary Ariel Burdett had on the panel during her audition.

After the auditions the contestants who have got through the first round go to bootcamp. Bootcamp sounds like a tough camping exercise but on the X Factor the contestants split into 4 categories and visit the panel’s luxorious homes. The categories are: male singers, female singers, over 25s and groups. The acts get some training and perform in front of the panel who become mentors. Each mentor chooses their 3 favourite acts and the final rounds begin.

The mentors choose the songs and help with rehearsals, the acts come up against each other and each week 1 act is voted off by the panel and telephone votes. I like watching the progress of the different acts. Some improve tremendously over the weeks and not just in the way that they sing. You can see a massive gain in confidence with some of the acts as they change from would be singing stars to performers.

Eventually a winner emerges though we might not always agree with that choice. Every year on the day of the final show there are discussions and arguments up and down the country about who we think should win. The prize is a £1m recording contract and the promise of stardom but do the X Factor winners become stars.

Steve Brookstein won the first series in 2004. After that he released a cover version of Against All Odds which became number 1 for one week in the UK single charts in January 2005. Steve released his first album Heart and Soul in May 2005 which came into the UK album charts at number 1. His record company dropped him in August 2005 after he reportedly refused to record another album of covers instead of his own material.

Steve then formed his own record label and released his second album 40,000 Things in October 2006 but it didn’t do well. Currently in September 2008 Steve is touring with the Madness musical Our House. Not so much fame and fortune as you would expect but I still like his singing.

Shayne Ward won the second series in 2005. Shayne’s first single That’s My Goal became the Christmas number one single and stayed in the top 75 for over 5 months. The single became the fourth fastest selling record of all time. After a second hit single he released his first album called Shayne Ward, which gained second place in the UK album charts.

Shayne had problems with vocal chord nodules in 2006, but fortunately they were treated successfully and he was able to continue his singing career. After releasing his autobiography ‘My Story’ Shayne completed a successful solo UK tour and after a hit from his double sided single If That’s Ok With You/No U Hang Up released his second successful album Breathless. He is currently working on a third album that is due out late 2008. Dishy Shayne has done well for himself and he certainly has the X Factor in my eyes.

Leona Lewis won the third series in 2007 and has become a big international star, certainly the most successful of the winners so far. Her first single A Moment Like This became the UK Christmas number one and sold more than the rest of the top 40 put together. It also broke the record for Internet downloads.

Leona’s first album ‘Spirit’ was released in November 2007 and became the fastest selling first album of all time in the UK and Ireland. Spirit also became the fourth fastest selling album ever. In January 2008 Spirit became the number one album in several countries worldwide and in April hit the US Billboard 200 at number one. Leona’s second album is planned for 2009 and then she goes on a world tour in 2010.

I wholeheartedly agreed with the choice of Leona as the X Factor 2007 winner. She was impressive on every show and her singing gave me goosebumps. Leona has a wonderful voice and came across as a really nice young lady. She seemed a little shy on the first few shows and although her confidence grew she never seemed to realise just how good she was.

Leon Jackson was the controversial winner of the fourth X Factor series. Scottish Leon won a lot of hearts with his cute looks, big gorgeous eyes and self-effacing manner. His singing performances never seemed to be winning performances but he still pulled it off in great style.

Leon’s first single When You Believe was the 2007 Christmas number one – that sounds familiar! His first album ‘Right Now’ is due to be released in October 2008. The highlight of his singing career so far is a joint performance at Wembley arena with his hero Michael Buble. Although Leon’s win was controversial it’s extraordinary that he didn’t start singing until not long before the X Factor auditions.

Who knows how successful Leon and the other X Factor winners will be in the future. Success isn’t guaranteed despite winning, but the television talent show and all of its competitors give winning entertainment value – including scary Ariel!

Celebrity Gap Year Blunders

Tags: ,

Many of us follow the lives of celebrities with interest, always thinking just how well-organised and together they must be to keep up with such hectic schedules. But, as these celebrity gap year blunders will prove, those famous folks are not always as perfect as we think they are!

Cheryl’s Malaria Mishap

She may currently be the nation’s favourite celebrity, as well as a role model for all those women going through divorce, but let’s hope that not too many gap year travellers are walking in Cheryl Cole’s shoes, or they might find themselves walking directly into mosquito mayhem. After travelling to Tanzania, despite claiming to have taken the correct medication, the singer was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with malaria. So, what should we learn from Cheryl’s story? It is crucially important to take malaria medication both before and during trips to areas where there is a high risk of contracting the disease. However, more than that, it is important to take extra precautions along the way, so make sure you stock up on insect repellent, mosquito nets and perhaps even fly swats before you go!

Anne’s Incorrect Assumptions

Anne Robinson’s austere and potentially rather alarming manner on The Weakest Link might well have us all thinking that such a woman could never make a faux pas in real life. Think again! Gap year students take note – you should always double check that the luggage you’ve collected from the conveyor belt is in fact yours, no matter how sure you think you are that it is your backpack or suitcase. Anne Robinson assumed that as she was the last one to arrive at the baggage lounge and all luggage had been collected, the case left had to be hers. She got a bit of a shock later however, when she opened the case to find a week’s worth of clothes that she had never seen before. Had she checked her case at the airport, she might have been able to limit both the hassle of getting her own bag back, and the time she had to wait for a change of clothes to arrive!

Lewis Hamilton Left Lacking

There’s one thing that should be done with care and attention when you’re preparing for your gap year and that’s the packing. If you are going to be away for long periods of time, you need to make sure that you have everything you need before you go, particularly if you are travelling to somewhere shopping centres are likely to be limited. So, be sure you don’t do what Lewis Hamilton did one holiday, which was to completely forget to pack his underpants! Lay your belongings out before you pack them into a case, and check then double check that you have everything you need. Then you can go about trying to figure out how to get it all into your suitcase.

So, it turns out that whilst celebrities are great for teaching us about fashion, fitness and many other things we love to read about in magazines, they are also great for reminding us of a few of the very basic mistakes that it is so easy to make both before and during your gap year. Learn from the best blunders and you can be sure that your gap year will go smoothly.

About Joe Mcelderry

Tags: ,

If you want to learn some information about Joe Mcelderry from X factor then I think I can help you out. I am a big fan of Joe Mcelderry and after doing a lot of research online and reading about him in the local newspapers have found out a lot about the great little singer appearing in X Factor this year. Here are some of the main facts about him.

Joseph is currently 18 years old and is from the South Shields area of Newcastle which is in the north of England near Scotland. He lives at home with his family and is currently a student. he has had a crush on Cheryl Cole for a long time and they are both from the same area of Newcastle.

Joe Mcelderry sang a song called ‘dance with my father’ at his audition in Newcastle to get into the X factor. Cheryl Cole said “You had me at hello”. She is mentoring Joe throughout the show too and explains on the show that he is like a little brother to her. They both sing and are from the same area so Joe Mcelderry and her have quite a bit in common.

When Joe has been on the show he has had to live inside the house with the other contestants. He has according to rumours started a relationship with Stacey Solomon who is another contestant in the house. These rumours have not been definitely confirmed as of yet.

He has been seen singing Karaoke on the internet with housemate on the show Lucie Jones. They were singing Grease songs from the musical It looked like great fun.

It is widely thought that Joe is one of the favourites to win the whole of X Factor 2009. he has looks, a smooth voice and likability factor with his always present smile. He has never been in the bottom two so far but he has some stiff competition from other male acts in the competition. Vote for Joe mcelderry to win. He s great!

Dubious X-Factor Voting

Tags: , ,

X-Factor is the national phenomenon that has captured the Saturday night of so many people. The public vote for their favorite acts each week to finally un-veil the latest music star to hit Britain. On paper it sounds exciting but the actual show itself is average. Of course i’m only talking for myself.

Last week I read an article in the paper which expressed concerns over the polling system at the end of every show on Saturday night. According to this article in the paper last week the phones were dead for over four hours on one Saturday night yet no one had reported that they had troubles getting through or placing their vote. This leads me to assume that people were voting yet the votes were not being counted??

This is not the first time that x-factor has been under the spot light. In 2006 it was reported that the x-factor competition was fixed so Leona Lewis could win. The rival contestant, Ben, stormed out of the show on the last week of the competition stating that he thought the show was rigged. Yet 2006 was not the only year that this accusation has popped out. The 2004 and 2005 competitions were both plagued by claims that the show was rigged in such a way that the last three contestants are always one for each judge therefore making it as even as possible and keeping people as entertained as possible right to the last minute.

Again, this is only my opinion but you have to ask yourself if the show is a little dodgy!?
